With the looming merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable, consumers might soon not have much of a choice in terms of how much they have to pay for their broadband service. But now they sure have more choices for the equipment.
Netgear today announced two home networking products designed specifically for cable Internet, the N600 Dual-Band WiFi Cable Modem Router (C3700) and the N300 WiFi Cable Modem Router (C3000). Both of these devices are modem/router combos, meaning they including both a cable modem and a Wi-Fi router in a single box.
Both the C3700 and the C3000 include a DOCIS 3.0 8x4 cable modem that offers a top broadband speed of up to 340Mbps. On the router side, they both support Gigabit Ethernet with four LAN ports. Both devices support the older standard of 802.11n with the top speed of 300Mbps. The C3700 is a dual-band Wi-Fi router offering that speed on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies at the same time. The C3000 is just a single-band Wi-Fi router, running only on the 2.4Ghz band.
Apart from the slow Wi-Fi speeds, the new devices are very similar to the Motorola SBG6782-AC, which supports the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard.
Both devices support IPv6 and include Netgear Genie, a platform combining software, Web interface, and mobile apps that make it easy to install and manage your home network. They both also have a USB 2.0 port to host an external hard drive to provide storage for the entire home network.
Judging from the specs, the two new devices will be very convenient for cable Internet users, but they are not fast enough to deliver top Internet speeds via their Wi-Fi networks. Both the C3700 and the C3000 Cable Modem Wi-Fi routers are available now at the suggested prices of $130 and $100, respectively. Netgear says they are certified to work with all US cable Internet providers.
