I first reported on the next 802.11ac chip from Quantenna last year, and soon you'll be able to enjoy it, with the availability of the Asus RT-AC87 Dual-band Wireless-AC2400 Gigabit Router.
This is the first router on the market that's capable of hitting the top 802.11ac Wi-Fi speed of 1.73Gbps on the 5GHz frequency band while supporting top 802.11n speeds on the 2.4GHz band.
To achieve this new level of Wi-Fi performance, the new router uses Quantenna's QSR1000 4x4 Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) chipset.
The RT-AC87 comes with four external antennas and features Universal Beamforming to maximize its range in the home or office. It's also said to improve signal strength and performance for older 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi clients. To achieve its top 1.73Gbps speed, however, a client would need to use the same chipset. The router, however, supports all existing Wi-Fi clients on the market.
One of the The RT-AC87's unique features is its AiProtection, which employs Trend Micro protection technology to monitor your home network in real time. It's designed to detect malware and other intrusions in Internet traffic and stop them before they reach connected clients.
Other than that, the new RT-AC87 shares the the same feature set as previous high-end routers from Asus, such as the RT-AC68U. These features include an easy-to-use Web interface and AiCloud 2.0, which turns the router into a personal cloud server, using files stored on an attached USB storage device.
The Asus RT-AC87 router is available in North America now with the estimated price of $270. Check back soon for a full review.
