Xbox One owners warned over prank

 

Xbox One owners have been warned that an internet prank could break their consoles.

The prank claims that following a set of instructions will enable Xbox One owners to play Xbox 360 games. The prank originated on the notorious 4chan internet forum.

The procedure is actually intended to unlock the developer tools that are present on every Xbox One console. However, if someone without a developers account follows the instructions, it send the console into a inescapable start-up loop.
“To be clear there is no way to make your Xbox One backwards compatible and performing steps to attempt this could make your console inoperable,” wrote Larry Hryb, director of programming for Microsoft’s Xbox Live network in a tweet.
 
The sequence turns the Xbox One console into a machine that is capable of testing games. However, there is no way to undo the sequence if the user does not have a valid ID.
It is unclear how many Xbox One owners have damaged their consoles in this way.
